All eyes on Rwanda Rally 2016

Kigali, Rwanda - August 04, 2016, All eyes on the 2016 Mountain Gorilla Rwanda Rally as Kigali prepares to receive competitors for Continental Championship scheduled for next weekend.

Current leader of the ARC, Don Smith of Kenya is expected to spearhead the foreign entries with Uganda sending the highest number of drivers with 22 followed by Rwanda 15, Burundi 7, Kenya 2 and Zambia 2 respectively.

Subarus lead with nine rally cars in the event followed by Mitsubishi with 8, Toyota 5, Peugeots 3, VW 1 and Ford respectively covering five major countries from the African Continent.

With a cushion of 29 points lead over Muna Singh of Zambian, Smith has to make sure of finishing both the last events to help Kenya retain the title second-year running.

Kenya’s Jaspteet Chatthe, the reigning ARC Champion has opted out of defending the title for the second consecutive season.

The three-day will take place on 12/14 August with Nyamata Golden Tulip Hotel as the main Rally Headquarters. The total distance will be 449 kilometers of which 201 will be competitive.

Route plans for the Rwanda’s round of the 2016 African Rally Championship have been set.

Clerk of the Course, Eric Maxime Nzamwita said his preparations for the Rwanda Gorilla Rally are in place and now waiting for real action to kick off next week.

“We have got our plans ready with a total of 13 competitive stages with Nyamata City hosting the shortest spectator of 4.53 kms both on tarmac and gravel. The special stage will be done twice like the rest of the other stages,’’ said Nzamwita.

Nzamwita added: “The event will start from the Amahoro Stadium while the main Service Park will be held at the Nyamata Stadium. We are thankful to Engen, Rwandair, Akagera Aviation, Printex, ESRI and Tulip Hotel for the great support.’’
