Kigali, Rwanda - July 25, 2016 - Route plans for the Rwanda’s round of the 2016 African Rally Championship have been set.

Clerk of the Course, Eric Maxime Nzamwita said his preparations for the Rwanda Gorilla Rally, which will be the penultimate round of the 2016 ARC are in its place and ready for the big event.

“We have got our plans ready with a total of 13 competitive stages with Nyamata Town hosting the shortest spectator of 4.53 kms. The special stage will be done twice like the rest of the other stages,’’ said Nzamwita.

The three-day will take place on 12/14 August with Nyamata Golden Tulip Hotel as the main Rally Headquarters. The total distance will be 449 kilometers of which 201 will be competitive.

Nzamwita added: “ This event will start from the Amahoro Stadium while the main Service Park will be held at the Nyamata Stadium. We are thankful to Engen, Rwandair, Akagera Aviation, Akagera ABG, Printex, Tulip Hotel, ESRI and Igihe.com for the great support.’’

Current leader of the ARC, Don Smith of Kenya is expected to spearhead the foreign interest while the locals will be headed by Rossanali Mohamed Abbas.

Other foreign drivers expected to tackle the event will include Desh Kananura, Kuku Ranjit, Omar Mayanja, Muna Singh Jnr, Kabega Musa, Rudy Cantanhede, Sultan Kalula, Bukera Vallery respectively.

Rwanda is expected to take center stage of the ARC contest with favorites Smith and Muna Singh of Zambia battling it out for the top honors with just two rounds of the series remaining.

With a cushion of 29 points lead over the Zambian, Smith has to make sure of finishing both the last events to help Kenya retain the title second-year running.

Kenya’s Jaspteet Chatthe is the reigning ARC Champion though he opted out of defending the title for the second consecutive season.

Instead, Jaspreet is concentrating on defending the Kenyan Chapionship, which he currently leads after four out of the eight rounds so far.

Smith has already submitted his entry form long before normal entries close on 31st July.

A total of five countries are expected to feature in the event. They include host nation Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi, Kenya and Zambia respectively.
